The full-day Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour is the best alternative to those not keen on hiking the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Just like Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain tops the bucket list of many travelers while visiting Cusco.
This full-day tour is an easier option. Unlike the trek to Vinicunca, the trip to Palccoyo begins at 0700 AM. We will be driving you closer to the summit. It just takes a 45-minute gradual hike through some picturesque highlands including the Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras).
This is a high-altitude experience. We highly recommend you spend at least two days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness. To offer you the best experience, we operate this in small groups. We also offer private tours to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain.
The best time to visit Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains is during the dry season April to November. During the rainy season, the trail gets slippery and often the colors of Palccoyo are covered in fog.
Cusco Hotel Transfer
04:30 AM
We will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0700 AM. Then in our private transport we will be driving you along the South Valley of Cusco to Checacupe. It is a small colonial town. The town houses a colonial church and a rope bridge that was built by Spanish conquistadors resembling Q’eswachaka.
Here we will be stopping so you can use the restrooms and buy some snacks if desired. From here, we will be driving off the road up the hill, closer to the summit of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. On our way, we will be passing through some remote communities and schools. This tour offers a closer interaction with the untouched remote communities.
Once at the summit, we will be gradually hiking for 45 minutes to reach the summit. On our way, we will be passing through the stone forest or bosque de piedras. This is a unique sight. You will also get a closer look at the mighty Ausangate Peak that dominates the southern skyline of Cusco on a clear day.
Once you have had your fill of the stunning views of the Ausangate Mountain range and Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, we will start our descend to the car park. From here, we will be driving you back to Checaupe. Here we will be stopping at a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we will be driving you back to Cusco.
The best time to visit Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is during the dry season, between April and November. It is often sunny and clear. During monsoon, the trails get slippery, and also the mountains are covered in snow which makes it quite challenging to see the colors of Palccoyo.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain in Cusco is 4900 meters (16076 ft) above sea level whereas the highest point of Vinicunca is at 5200 meters (17060 ft). It is easy to reach the summit of Palccoyo. From the car park, it takes 45 minutes to get to the top with a gradual uphill hike.
The easiest and most practical way to get to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is by signing up for a 1 Day Trek to Palccoyo tour in Cusco. As it is quite off the road, it will be challenging or rather impossible at times to find transport from Checacupe to Palccoyo.
We spent 4 days in Cusco and took the opportunity to visit Palccoyo Mountain and did a very short hike and the group was small so it was easy for us to visit the mountain with the attention of our guide. Lunch was good, we recommend it.
